The Bridge to Nowhere Project will resume
I’m pleased to share a long-overdue update on the East Croydon Station footbridge.
The bridge, which was built in 2012 but whose footbridge has never opened to the public, is now set to open in 2027.
I can confirm that yesterday, funding agreements between Croydon Council, Network Rail and Menta Regeneration were signed. Network Rail’s contractor is expected to begin work this summer, meaning the project can now move forward.
Since being elected, I have spent 19 months campaigning to get this project moving again.
• In December 2024, I wrote to Network Rail on behalf of my constituents to organise a site visit with the relevant stakeholders and Sarah Jones MP. I knew we needed to get the right people around the table.
• In March 2025, I supported a councillor and resident-led campaign to improve footbridge accessibility.
• Throughout spring and summer 2025, I continued to raise and follow up on community concerns.
• In October 2025, when Network Rail confirmed that the bridge would open by the end of the year, I pressed them again for an honest timeline when that deadline slipped.
• In December 2025, I pushed for a further meeting with Network Rail, Croydon Council and Menta Regeneration.
• In June and July this year, I continued to press for another update.
Today’s confirmation that the funding agreements have been signed is the result of that sustained pressure.
This is an important step forward and a real win for Croydon East. But the job is not finished. I will not stop pushing until the bridge is open for residents.
